Tamayo Perry, a surfer, lifeguard, and actor who held roles in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Blue Crush, died on Sunday after being attacked by a shark while surfing in Hawaii. He was 49.
Perry was an eight-year veteran of Honolulu Ocean Safety and a well-known North Shore waterman. He also did stunts for the 2004 Owen Wilson film The Big Bounce.
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi released a statement expressing his condolences to Perry's family and friends.
"Tamayo was a beloved member of our community and a true waterman," Blangiardi said. "He will be deeply missed."
The attack occurred at around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at Keawakapu Beach in Maui. Perry was surfing with friends when he was bitten on the leg by a shark.
Perry was able to paddle back to shore, where he was met by paramedics. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he later died.
